Last Monday, April 19, all of San Antonio's soccer fans came to Paul McGinlay field at Trinity University to watch the Haiti Men's National Team play the Trinity University Men's soccer team. Over 3,500 people showed up for the event, most of them non-Trinity Students. San Antonio Sports promoted the event, so there was more than enough coverage by the media across the state of Texas. The event started with a presentation by the CEO of San Antonio Sports, the organization that took great interest in the event, giving the Haitian team housing during there trip, while also donating merchandise to their program.
As the world knows, Haiti experienced a devastating earthquake months ago. Lucky enough for the players, they were on the practice field when it happened, however their federation lost 32 members under the rubble of their office building that collapsed. While the lives of Haiti National Soccer Federation are much more important, they also lost all their equipment, and a place to practice when their field was inhabited by refugees’ tents. Having received a large donation of gear from San Antonio Sports, the game was underway.
In the first half, Haiti held the ball for 80% of the time, however the Trinity Tigers held them off from scoring any goals. Haiti had many chances to score, while Trinity only had one, which failed. In the second half Haiti turned it up a notch, scoring two to put themselves ahead of the Tigers. When the game ended, Haiti’s fans rushed the field, and after the social the Haiti men’s National Team and Trinity Tigers had dinner together.

Spurs vs. Cavaliers

In the latest news, the Spurs are still behind the Dallas Mavericks in the Southwest Division. Following this common trend throughout the season, the Spurs have more than 5 games to make up if they want to catch up to the Mavericks. Being a very unlikely scenario, the Spurs will have to hope for some serious luck to make it into the playoffs.
In recent efforts, the San Antonio Spurs have signed guard Garrett Temple for the rest of the season after having the rookie on a 10 day contract with the team. Hopefully this six foot six guard can bring a little needed help to the spurs offense. A 2009 graduate from LSU, Garrett was a very promising player coming out of a top Division one basketball program.
In relation to Trinity University, a rumor has been circulating that the Cavaliers will be practicing in our schools gym tomorrow, March 25, for their matchup they have against the Spurs on the 26th. I do not see why the infamous Shaquille O’Neil and Lebron James would want to practice in our Bell Center, but it could prove to be a quiet environment for them to practice. There should be many people supporting the Spurs at this game, for Cleveland is one of the biggest opponents any NBA team will face this season. Hopefully, with a little support and a lot of luck, the Spurs will win a very needed game to push for their spot in the playoffs.

San Antonio Rampage

Being from the North, I was quite surprised to learn that San Antonio had a hockey team. When most people think of San Antonio, they think of three things, Mexican culture, hot weather, and the prized Spurs. Rarely, however, is the San Antonio Rampage brought up. While the Rampage seems to be well supported amongst other American Hockey League team, they are currently second to last in the West Division of the AHL.
Like most professional, or semi-professional hockey teams in the US, the San Antonio Rampage’s roster is predominantly made up of international players, the majority of them hailing from Canada. With others from Scandinavia, the Rampage has many talented players, however they need to find their stride this season to improve their record. It has been said that while the Rampage has no official NHL farm team connection, the Rampage has many players with strong potential to play in the NHL. Currently, however, in none of the standout categories are any Rampage players included. The categories are, top goalies, top scorers, streaks, and leaders in all points combined. Unfortunately, the Rampage seem to be having an off season, but with high hopes and Trinity University student support, they can pull their reputation out of the gutter.

On Friday the 22nd, the Spurs hosted a crucial game against the Houston Rockets. There were countless Trinity University students present, many supporting their hometown team, the Houston Rockets. Without Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming, the Rockets are star-less. Facing the larger, more experienced Spurs, it almost seemed to be a lost cause for the Rockets. However, emerging star Aaron Brooks took charge of the game with many key plays. The game started out with the Spurs having a substantial lead, and once the Rockets seemed to find their stroke, they slowly crept up on the Spurs.
Sitting in the College section among many Trinity University students, the two teams provided for a very entertaining game. Whether it was much shorter than average Aaron Brooks driving for a lay up, or one of the only white players on the court, Budinger, stuffing himself on the rim for a break-away dunk, a good time was had by all viewing the various events of the game.
After playing few points under the Spurs for much of the game, the Rockets took charge in the fourth period. Finding their shots, making passes and important drives, the Rockets commandeered and held the lead two minutes into the period. The high scoring game ended with the Rockets on top, beating the Spurs 105 to 96. This was a crucial game for the Rockets, putting them only one win behind the Spurs in the standings.

San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs are definitely the most heavily supported sports team in the San Antonio area. You will find many of these supporters on the Trinity University campus, with many students attending the games. With big NBA name stars like Duncan, Ginobili and Parker, they certainly display an entertaining show. Currently ranked 2nd in the Southwest division of the Western conference, the Spurs have a good chance to make it to the playoffs, being three games behind Dallas. Furthermore, while being second in the Southwest division, they are fourth in the Western Conference, a position that could change either way over the course of the season.
The San Antonio Spurs often have University nights where students can buy very cheap tickets for only ten dollars. By lowering prices for students they raise attendance and provide a fun environment for students to cheer on their hometown professional basketball team. This Friday, January 22, the Spurs will be having another of many Trinity University nights. I will be attending this night at the A, T&T Center, having already purchased my nosebleed ticket for ten dollars. In this game the Spurs will be playing the Houston Rockets, and hopefully the large number of Houstonians at Trinity University will turn out for this game. The Rockets are right behind the Spurs in the Southwest division, only by two wins. This should be a big night for both teams, and I advise one to attend this exciting game.
